What’s being part of the British Society of Flavourists (BSF) Council actually like, and why should I join?!

Having attended a few of the lectures and events the BSF have organised over the past few years, I began to meet more and more people sharing a common passion for all things flavour! Although I work in the flavouring industry, I am by no means a flavourist, but quickly realised after discussions with members this doesn’t exclude you from becoming a member or taking a more active role as part of the Council.

 
 

I decided to put myself forward for the BSF Council, at first with intention to build a stronger network and play some role in how the Society is run - although I had no idea what I could offer other than some enthusiasm, a fresh pair of eyes and perhaps some new ideas!

I was warmly welcomed by a diverse mix of Council members, those with many years of industry experience and knowledge and others, like myself, in the early stages of their flavour career and eager to learn more.

Members can contribute as much or as little as their schedule permits, although we all recognise there is still an organisation to run.

The Council are very mindful that we all have busy lives, inside and outside of work, and as such, distribute workload and tasks evenly throughout the group. Telephone meetings are arranged whenever possible, with physical meetings often arranged around organised events. Members can contribute as much or as little as their schedule permits, although we all recognise there is still an organisation to run.

As well as building a good network and having the ability to help shape future events, it’s skills I never before thought of that have been most beneficial. As a team, the Council essentially run a small business with accounts, marketing, website development, events organisation, sponsorship, and formalised meetings, plus much more – all of which you are exposed to and can learn.
